Hello PWP hikers,

Our next hike is Sunday, April 19 at 8:45 am, Wild Horse Trail in the area near Iron Mountain in Poway.

About this Hike:

We begin heading east on Iron Mountain Trail for 1/3 mile, then take Wild Horse Trail going north for about a mile until we reach Ellie Lane Trail. This part of the trail passes by two lakes and has some shade afforded by areas of lush vegetation. As we approach Ellie Lane Trail, the trail becomes more difficult, with steep and rocky parts, so good hiking boots are needed. We take Ellie Lane west to a staging area and then return to Wild Horse trail. As we approach the second lake, we head west at a fork in the trail which takes us directly back to the parking area. The hike is 3.5 miles as shown below. For anyone wishing for a shorter easier hike, you can turn around after passing the upper lake, as this avoids the steeper rocky part. 

Directions and Parking: 

The parking lot is located at the intersection of Poway Road and Highway 67. Technically the front part of the lot is for commuters, and the hiking lot is toward the back, but it is OK to park in the commuter lot. On Sunday morning the lot can get full, so you may want to arrive a bit early as spots may open up if you are patient.

The trail head is accessible from the parking lot.  We will meet near the sign shown below. 

Facilities: There are semi primitive restrooms in the parking lot. 

Weather: Mostly sunny with a high of 79.

● Wear good hiking shoes – this hike has rocky steep areas.

● We’ll take our group picture at 8:45 am and start our hike.

● If you arrive late, you’ll possibly have no problem catching up with some of us.

● As always, you can choose to go as far as you feel comfortable or have time for. 

● No need to reply. Just show up (bring anyone you want).

● Don’t forget water. And some of you might also want to bring sunscreen, hat, snack, camera, binoculars, GPS or walking stick.

● Voluntary trash pickup: bring your own trash bag, gloves, mechanical pick-up stick, etc.
